- RARE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN STONE AXE HEAD,
RARE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN STONE AXE HEAD, EX MUSEUMNative American, Southwestern United States, southern Colorado, Ancestral Puebloan, (Anasazi), Pueblo I to Pueblo III period, ca. 750 to 1300 CE. This is a hand-pecked and polished stone axe or hammer head, with a pair of side notches for hafting. The head is divided into separate heads by the large notches opposite each other along the periphery - one notch is slightly larger than the other - and looking closely it has a slightly raised central ridge. These notches facilitated hafting to a pole with a cord, or directly to a branch that was still green and pliable. One head is clearly the axe blade - the tip is sharpened to a cutting edge. The butt end is thicker and rounded, ideal for use as a hammer or club. Size: 5.5" L x 3.25" W (14 cm x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, purchased in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum from 1962 to 1970, catalog no. 8562; ex-Bill Mitchell collection Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958 to 1962

- NATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONE AXE
NATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONE AXE HEAD - FULL GROOVENative American, Midwestern United States, Michigan, Farwell, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 BCE (7000 BP). A hefty stone axe head that is hand-pecked from a mottled gray stone. Across one end is a full groove that encircles the entire circumference of the axe head, which not only gave the implement its name - "full groove stone axe" - but also allowed it to be attached to a wooden handle with a cord. The head is elongated with a rounded butt end and a thick body that tapers to a straight cutting edge. This is a substantial tool, great for a variety of tasks, such as chopping wood. Size: 7.5" L x 4.5" W (19 cm x 11.4 cm)

- TAIRONA GREENSTONE AXE HEADPre-Columbian,
TAIRONA GREENSTONE AXE HEADPre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A nice example of a sweeping axe head that is hand-carved from mottled grass green stone with beautiful dark gray, beige, and cream veining. The tool features a crescent-shaped blade head, a sturdy, rectangular neck, and a thick handle with a biconically drilled suspension hole. Axe heads like this example were perhaps carved for ritualistic or ceremonial purposes - rather than for utilitarian use - and was perhaps deposited into a grave with a deceased individual. Size: 3" L x 6.125" H (7.6 cm x 15.6 cm)

- ARCHAIC NATIVE AMERICAN 3/4 GROOVE STONE
ARCHAIC NATIVE AMERICAN 3/4 GROOVE STONE AXE HEAD**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 5000 BCE to 1000 CE. A hefty stone axe or hammer head that is hand-pecked from a dark gray hardstone. A groove is cut around three quarters of the circumference of the tool, and as the name suggests, this is therefore designated as 3/4 axe head. These grooves facilitated hafting the stones onto a wooden pole or handle for greater leverage with fibrous twine or leather straps. The rounded heads were for pounding and the blade end was ideal for shaping or cutting wood or softer stones. Size: 6.5" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (16.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

- VALDIVIAN STONE AXE HEAD**Originally
VALDIVIAN STONE AXE HEAD**Originally Listed At $250**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivia culture, ca. 3500 to 1800 BCE. A very fine stone celt or axe head that is comprised of a straight handle side and slightly flared corners with a convex body that tapers to a rounded cutting edge. The stone is a smooth, dark-gray color tinged with a hint of green. This celt was formed by pecking and grinding until smooth. The lateral projections on the handle's edge may have made this blade head easier to attached to a wooden pole or handle. Size: 5.25" L x 5" W (13.3 cm x 12.7 cm)
Hand axes of this form have been found as part of the Kotosh Religious tradition, a name that archaeologists have given to ritual buildings built between 3000 and 1500 BCE in the mountain drainages of the Andes. Celts like this one, although shaped like a utilitarian tool, were made specifically for ritual purposes and were often buried with people of importance.

- MASSIVE / SPECTACULAR OLMEC JADE CELTPre-Columbian,
MASSIVE / SPECTACULAR OLMEC JADE CELTPre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 900 to 600 BCE. A spectacular and massive celt made from a beautiful jade stone. This celt is an ancient tool, shaped like an axe head with a rounded blade and slightly incurved sides that form a straight edge. The surface is delightfully smooth in texture; formed over many hours using painstaking techniques by master artisans. The lovely green hues of the jade made this a desirable piece, and jade held symbolic power for ancient cultures; perhaps its color was associated with water and vegetation. In Mesoamerica, from the time of the Olmec civilization, the simple blade was associated with agriculture and food, since stone axe heads were used for clearing fields. However, a stunning jade celt such as this one would have been used in important ritual ceremonies. Size: 10.5" L x 4.125" W (26.7 cm x 10.5 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Celts were associated with ears of corn, the V-shape being associated with the husk from which the cob emerged. At La Venta (a coastal city near present day Tabasco), caches of celts were discovered planted vertically like miniature stelae. The blunt end of this celt would suggest a similar use, and when placed in a vertical position its appearance is much more dramatic. In this stance, the celt served to define the central axis mundi and the corners of the four-sided world, regarded as a cosmic maize field.

- 18TH C. NATIVE AMERICAN & USA IRON &
18TH C. NATIVE AMERICAN & USA IRON & STONE AXES (3)Native American, United States, Plains Tribes, ca. 18th to 19th century CE; North America, United States, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A collection of 3 iron and stone axe heads, each hafted on a wooden handle. The largest axe is made by P. Garcia, and stamped on the blade with "PG" above the full name (slightly rubbed and faint) is an anvil. The cylindrical socket is hafted onto a polished wooden handle. The other iron axe has a slender head and a weathered handle and heavy patina. The Native American made axe features a three-quarter groove stone axe head, so called for the groove (covered by the deer leather cord) that enables the stone to be hafted to a handle - perfectly exemplified by this tool. Stone axes such as this were in use for thousands of years before the widespread availability of iron from Europeans. Size of largest: 22" L x 6" W (55.9 cm x 15.2 cm)

- NATIVE AMERICAN EASTERN WOODLANDS STONE
NATIVE AMERICAN EASTERN WOODLANDS STONE AXE HEADNative American, central/midwestern United States, Eastern Woodlands, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved stone hand axe exhibiting dark brown and gray hues. The tool features a pair of deep hand grooves on the sides of the body, a tapered butt end, and a lengthy blade head with gently convex faces and a blunt but large blade edge. Tools like this example were perhaps used for cutting and shaping softer materials like wood rather than for splitting or shaping harder materials like stone.
